Assurance case development is not a trivial process. It involves several steps, firstly, to define the right goals and context, then to develop convincing line of reasoning and to collect valid supporting evidence. Many issues of unconvincing or bad structured argument, unsupported claims, incomplete or outdated evidence have to be resolved to produce a strong and valid assurance case. Efficient and effective management of all issues that arise during the argument development is the key to a successful project.

Some issues can be identified and reported by NOR-STA. Furthermore the tool also assists users in the process of argument reviews and improvement. It also reports metrics of argument quality and completeness.

During the meeting we will discuss how to use the existing NOR-STA features in an effective way and what new features would improve the process in the future.

The agenda of the meeting includes:

  • What issues may happen and how we can deal with them in the argument development process?
  • Automatic detection and reporting of the issues in the argument.
  • Managing issues for a single argument and for composite arguments..

NOR-STA support three assurance case model including GSN. The implementation of Core GSN as defined in GSN Community Standard version 3.0 was now complete. In NOR-STA version 7.9 released yesterday we delivered implementation of the last missing types of relations. Now you can in your argument in NOR-STA:
  • define claims supported directly by other claims,
  • attach justifications and assumptions to claims.
Core GSN is now fully implemented in NOR-STA. The assessment mechanism has been updated to support the new relations in the argument structure.
We continue the implementation of GSN Modular Extension. We have already implemented one type of argument module binding: the relation supported by a module. In the next version of NOR-STA we plan to implement two other types of relations:
  • away element,
  • supported by a contract.

Automating these processes have a potential of saving time and money, as well as improving consistency between assurance cases and the related systems. The questions arise what can and what should be automated in argument development, evidence management, argument reviews and change management and when we can trust the automated process.
During the meeting we will investigate the potential scope of assurance case automation and approaches for technical solutions.
We will discuss:
  • What are the specific areas of assurance case automation?
  • How to manage co-existence of manual and automatic argument development?
  • How to make the automation process trustworthy and adaptable to changes?

Assurance cases developed according with GSN Community Standard version 3 and also with ISO 15026-2 standard is now possible in NOR-STA version 7.8. Both standards are widely used however there are differences in their definitions of the argument structure and the naming conventions are different.
The new version also adds assurance case editing functions in the Basic view of the argument. When you develop GSN assurance case the GSN symbols of elements types are used. The screenshots below present the same fragment of a GSN argument in the diagram view (on the left) and in Basic view (on the right) where a structure of a section is presented in a hierarchical way.
Argument modules can be integrated with interfaces regardless of the notation, type and assessment methods they use.
The new version brings also some other new features like the list of ten last visited projects or a function to delete an assessment in a branch of the argument.

Security Protection Profiles specify security requirements that apply to a specific component and which need to be verified. Protection Profiles are used for IACS components to demonstrate satisfaction of requirements of IEC 62443 and also for medical devices and IEC TR 60601-4-5.
During the meeting we will investigate the possibility of defining a Protection Profile for a class of components of a security relevant system and then building the conformance argumentation template to be reused for the representatives of the class. A case study of a Protection Profile of Protocol Converter Device (PCD) class of medical devices and the related conformance argumentation template developed in NOR-STA will be presented.
We will discuss:
  • How to develop Protection Profiles for system components?
  • How to represent conformance argumentation templates in NOR-STA?
  • How to use the templates to maintain security assurance?

Assumptions play an important role in assurance cases and they should be properly managed to ensure trustworthy argumentation. On our March meeting we have discussed the main roles the assumptions can play in the argument. On our next meeting we will discuss assumptions management and present demonstrators in NOR-STA. We will focus on the three roles of assumptions:
  • closing open arguments,
  • representing contextual constraints for a claim,
  • representing defeaters.
During the meeting we will present and discuss argument demonstrators in NOR-STA implementing these use cases. The focus will be on assessing adequacy of the current NOR-STA mechanisms and possibly identifying their extensions to be planned for in the NOR-STA Roadmap.
We invite for the next NOR-STA User Group meeting on April 21.
