Take a look at the argumentation presenting the basic elements of functional safety. The argumentation has over 50 elements, so it’s not extensive, but it does demonstrate the application of the main principles of this approach. Each branch of the argumentation also provides information on how to further refine it for real-world projects.
The argumentation also includes comments on best practices for building an assurance case and common problems.
This is our sample assurance case argument for one hazard of a medical device, an infusion pump.
The argument is simplified, but it demonstrates the basic elements of an assurance case in PREMIS: argument structure, evidence application, evaluation, and chat. You can view the entire argument in a single diagram, or separate diagrams for each step of the reasoning.
Dynamic assurance cases can successfully support the inspection readiness. The argument structure facilitates supervision over the validity and completeness of process documentation. Most of the argument structure is static, but the key is keeping the evidence up to date.
The presented example refers to the inspection readiness requirements for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
This is a training modular assurance case which is used to present module interfaces and bindings. Each module can contain elements in two types of interfaces:
- Provided interfaces which are published to support other argument modules.
- Required interfaces that are to be supported by other modules.
Three types of bindings are used: away elements, supported by module or supported by contract.
The assurance case was originally published by E. Kenneth Hong Fong and David A. Wheeler in IDA report “A Sample Security Assurance Case Pattern”.
